The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) chapter, has joined a nationwide peaceful protest to demand the immediate and safe release of one of its members, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, who was kidnapped from her residence on December 27, 2023. Dr. Popoola, a dedicated medical professional serving at JUTH, was abducted in an alarming incident that has since sparked concern and solidarity actions across medical communities in Nigeria.
Carrying placards with messages calling for her freedom and highlighting the dangers faced by healthcare professionals, members of NARD JUTH chapter organized a peaceful demonstration. They marched through strategic locations around the hospital and the city of Jos, drawing attention to the issue of insecurity affecting healthcare workers and the larger Nigerian society. The doctors expressed their frustration with the growing trend of abductions, which has significantly affected the morale and safety of professionals dedicated to serving the public.

In their addresses, representatives of the NARD emphasized that the healthcare sector is already burdened with numerous challenges, including limited resources and a demanding workload. They urged the government and security agencies to prioritize the safety of healthcare professionals who risk their lives daily to provide critical services. They further called on all relevant authorities to intensify efforts in ensuring Dr. Popoola’s safe return, warning that prolonged insecurity could lead to severe consequences for healthcare delivery in the country.
This incident is not isolated, as similar cases of abductions of healthcare workers have been reported in various parts of Nigeria. Such incidents contribute to the increasing wave of fear among medical professionals, who are increasingly vulnerable to attacks and kidnappings. Consequently, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors at the national level has voiced strong support for their colleagues at JUTH, with members nationwide either organizing or participating in peaceful protests and awareness campaigns.
The medical community, alongside friends, family, and concerned citizens, remains hopeful that Dr. Ganiyat Popoola will be safely reunited with her family soon. Meanwhile, NARD leaders have appealed to the government for prompt action to curb this disturbing trend and to put measures in place to protect all Nigerians, especially those working in essential service sectors like healthcare.
